My mom usually makes healthy kind of breakfasts. Ulutham Kanji, Paal Kanji and Payaru Kanji are common among them. Kanji or Porridges become a comforting and less time consuming breakfasts. Mostly this type of porridges will be accompanied by Thogaiyals or Pappada Miladi (a dish common in Nagercoil).
Ulundhu Kanji or Urid Dhal Porridge is often made because, it gives strength to back bones. It is too good for women. It is a home remedy for back pain. After delivery or puberty, we can make and have this Kanji often.
This recipe explains how to make Ulutham Kanji in Pressure Cooker. I accompanied this with Kothamalli Thogaiyal and Vathakkiya Chinna Vengayam. The combo was too good.

Ingredients
- 1/4 cup Black Urid Dhal Karuppu Ulunthu
- 3/4 cup Ponni Rice Sona Masoori
- 15 Garlic Pods
- 1/4 tsp Fenugreek Vendhayam
- 1 cup Milk Pasum Paal or Coconut Milk
- little Salt
Instructions
- Heat a pan and dry roast black urid dhal (ulundu) until it is heated up fully. Take ulunthu and rice in a vessel and wash it well.
- Take washed and drained urid dhal and rice in a pressure cooker. Add fenugreek and garlic to it. Then, add 3 and half cups of water. Pressure cook for 4 whistles in medium flame.
- Open only after the pressure subsides. Add a cup of boiled and cold milk or coconut milk. Add little salt and mix it up. Ulunthu Kanji is ready to serve.
Recipe Notes
- Rice to Urid Dhal Ratio is 3:1. In this recipe, I have used 1/4 cup Urid Dhal and Rice is 3 times of it.
- 3 and half cups of water is needed for total contents.
Stepwise Recipe to make Ulutham Kanji
Heat a pan and dry roast urid dhal (ulunthu) until it is heated up fully. It will release a very nice aroma. Take ulunthu and rice in a vessel and wash it well.


Take washed and drained urid dhal and rice. Add fenugreek and garlic to it. Add 4 cups of water.


Pressure cook for 4 whistles in medium flame. Open only after the pressure subsides.


Add a cup of boiled and cold milk or coconut milk. Add little salt and mix it up. Ulunthu Kanji is ready to serve.
