Kuthiraivali Kichadi Recipe

  • 3/4 Cup Kuthiraivali Rice
  • 1/4 Cup Moong Dal
  • 3.5 Cups Water
  • 1 Carrot
  • 10 to 15 Beans
  • little Fresh Peas Optional
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Coriander Powder
  • little Chopped Coriander Leaves
  • little Salt

To Saute

  • 1 tsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Ghee
  • 5 or 6 Cashews
  • small stick of Cinnamon or Pattai
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • little Curry Leaves
  • 1/4 Onion
  • 1 tsp minced Ginger and Garlic or paste
  • 2 Green Chillies
  • 1 Tomato


  1. Wash and clean Kuthiraivali Rice and Moong Dal. Chop vegetables and get them ready

  2. Heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker. Add cinnamon, cumin, curry leaves and cashews. Saute till cashews turn golden brown.

  3. Add onion, ginger garlic and chillies. Saute till onion becomes soft.

  4. Add vegetables and tomatoes. Saute once or twice and add all the powders. ( turmeric powder, chilli powder and coriander powder ). Mix it up.

  5. Add kuthiraivali rice and moong dal, 3.5 cups of water, salt and green peas.

  6. Pressure cooker for 3 to 4 whistles in medium flame.

  7. After pressure releases, open and give a gentle mix. Sprinkle coriander leaves and serve it.
