Broccoli is rich in vitamin k and protein. I bought 2 heads of broccoli and was searching for some indian recipes. Thats why I am posting some broccoli recipes often. When you cook broccoli, you should take care that it should not be overcooked. If it is overcooked, the health benefits will vanish. So remember to maintain the crispness. Also you should not how mature is your broccoli. If it is young and soft, you just need simple sauteing. If it is mature and rough, you should boil it in water for 3 minutes and then handle the sauteing. Other than that you can make a number of indian recipes with broccoli. This thoran will be like our usual poriyals. It can be had with any kind of sambar. It will also tastes good with rasam.

Broccoli Thoran | Broccoli Poriyal | Indian Broccoli Recipe

Ingredients
  • Broccoli - 1/2 head, cut to thin strips
  • Onion - 1/2, sliced
  • turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • salt and oil - as per taste
  • coconut oil - 1/4 teaspoon
  • mustard seeds urid dhal and curry leaves- 1/4 teaspoon
  • to grind coarsely
  • coconut - 1/4 cup
  • shallot - 1
  • cumin seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
  • red chillies - 1 or 2

Quick Procedure
  • Take coconut, cumin seeds, red chillies and shallot in a blender and grind it coarsely.
  • Heat a pan. Add oil. Add mustard seeds, urid dhal and curry leaves. Let them sputter.
  • Add onion and saute till it becomes transparent.
  • Add sliced and washed broccoli.
  • Add salt and turmeric powder.
  • Saute well and give a good mix. Sprinkle some water, if needed.
  • Cover it and cook for 2 to 8 minutes. Saute it then and there.
  • Once the raw smell goes of and it slightly becomes soft, add ground coconut mixture.
  • Saute well till the raw smell goes off.
  • Add little coconut oil and give a good mix.
  • Coconut will start separating from the vessel. Now you can switch off the flame and serve this thoran in your lunch.
